NPP Barely Reaches 11.33% Of Intended 500k Votes Target In Volta

In the last general elections, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) received only 11.33% of the 500,000 votes it had hoped for in the Volta Region.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s presidential candidate, received 56,699 votes, which is almost 45% fewer than President Akufo-Addo received in the 2020 general elections.

Early in the election campaign, the Party’s regional executives established a goal of 300,000.

At a news conference in Ho, however, NPP Director of Communications Richard Ahiagba declared an increase to 500,000 in the hopes that regional and national development projects would persuade voters to support his party.

Because of the excitement that locals showed for party events in the area, national and regional executives were hopeful that President Akufo-Addo’s 100,481 votes in 2020 would be increased.

The unfulfilled achievement was ascribed by some to a lack of interest in voting in Saturday’s polls, which saw a 64% turnout, and a call for a party switch.

Since the sole parliamentary seat won in 2020 was taken from John Peter Amewu in Hohoe, the goal of gaining at least three more seats was unsuccessful.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, its presidential candidate, received the most votes in the Ho Central Constituency (4,153), while he received the fewest votes (1,375) in the Adaklu Constituency.

In the polls, the opposition, led by John Dramani Mahama, defeated the NPP.

Additionally, the opposition National Democratic Congress saw a little decline in votes from 606,508 in 2020 to 583,234 in 2024. Nevertheless, the party secured a majority in parliament, and its leader, John Mahama, emerged victorious in the presidential contest.
