The Black Stars’ failure to win the 2015 AFCON, according to Ghanaian football icon Rev. Osei Kofi, was caused by former President John Mahama’s unfulfilled pledge to earlier football luminaries.
Speaking to Joy News, Osei Kofi blamed Ghana’s defeat in the 2015 AFCON final on the team’s disregard for its former football stars.
The Asante Kotoko icon claims that former President John Mahama had promised incentives to the teams who had won the AFCON in the past, but he had instead given them tokens.
He remarked:
“A promise and a token, are they the same? If John Mahama had fulfilled his promises, Ghana would’ve won,”
“The five penalties, Ghana scored the first, Ivory Coast missed. Ghana scored their second, and Ivory Coast missed. We needed one more goal to win the cup. You see what the token did for Ghana? The token took us to the final but we couldn’t win the cup”
Nine years ago, following a goalless draw in normal and extra time, the Black Stars advanced to the AFCON final where they were barely defeated by the Ivory Coast on penalties.
Ghana had a two-goal lead going into the penalty shootout, but they wasted it, and the Elephants came back to win 9–8 on penalties.
One of Ghana’s finest football players is Osei Kofi, a well-known player from the 1960s.
The 82-year-old played a key role in the Black Stars’ 1963 and 1965 AFCON championship victories.
