Sachet Water Banned In Lagos Starting January 2025

The Lagos State Government said on Thursday that, as of January 2025, single-use plastics and sachet water will no longer be allowed in circulation.

During a stakeholders’ workshop on implementing the ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastics (SUPs) for packaging, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the impending ban.

The action is a component of the government’s plan to establish regulatory standards for the management of plastic trash, with the ultimate objective of fostering a more sustainable and healthful environment.

Stakeholders have asked the government to reconsider an outright ban in favor of a phased rollout. They think that by doing this, the current economic difficulties will be lessened and improved compliance will be ensured.

Mosaku Ololade, Chairperson of Lagos ATWAP, expressed the group’s readiness to work with the government on the upcoming sachet water ban. She mentioned that they are educating their members, and with over 2,000 members employing more than 10,000 workers, she urged the government to phase in the ban to allow businesses time to adjust.

Previously, in January 2024, Lagos State banned Styrofoam in government offices and across the city due to concerns over plastic waste and its environmental impact.
