2 Nigerians Arrested In Asokore Mampong EC Registration Centre

Two foreign nationals who made attempts to take part in the voter registration drive in Asokore Mampong, in the Ashanti Region, are now in local police custody.

The people, who were identified as nationals of Nigeria, were unable to adequately explain their presence at the registrating center to law enforcement and representatives of the Electoral Commission (EC).

As of Wednesday, May 15, 2024, electoral officials in Asokore have successfully registered 2,304 people to vote, despite technical difficulties seen nationwide during the first round of the ongoing voter registration campaign.

Electoral officers have identified about six instances of double registration alongside the apprehension of two foreign nationals on Thursday, May 16.

Angela Afiriyie Osei, the District Officer of the EC in Asokore Mampong, warned unqualified individuals to refrain from attempting to register.

She emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the registration process and urged everyone to follow the guidelines strictly.

Meanwhile, the police have reported that the detained individuals are currently undergoing interrogation.

The Electoral Commission (EC) began a limited voter registration drive in Ghana, starting on May 7. The 27-day process will end at 268 district offices on May 27. The drive aims to register 623,000 Ghanaians, including those who turned 18 since 2020 and those unable to register.
