Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, predicted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in power, will be impacted by the recent Dumsor crisis in the general elections scheduled for 2024.
He pointed out that people consider energy issues a critical consideration when selecting a candidate. Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that the intermittent power outages that occurred under the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama played a major role in his downfall since the opposition NPP utilized them as a political tool. The NPP took advantage of the “dumsor” problem to sway Ghanaians’ electoral choices.
Further criticizing the government’s response to the present intermittent Dumsor problems, Dr. Asah-Asante said that civilians were being disproportionately affected. He emphasized that the administration has to acknowledge the problems and show that it is prepared to find solutions.
What he said:
“Remember the dumsor economy which Dr. Bawumia made noise about which was legitimate at the time and the same legitimacy can be brought to bear on the current dumsor which the government is pretending doesn’t exist.”
“We feel it. We experience it. Let no one deceive himself or herself that the fact that you have not said it bluntly out loud means dumsor does not exist. It does and nobody can deceive anybody. Governance must be handled with truthfulness.
“Proceed with integrity, there is a problem. Just be forthright with it. Come out and say this problem exists, but as leaders, we will try and fix it.”
