NLC directs 3 education unions

Call off strike – NLC directs 3 education unions.
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed three education unions currently on strike to call off their industrial action with immediate effect to pave the way for further discussions on their issues.
It said until the strike was called off, the substantive issue(s) could not be heard.
The unions are the Senior Staff Association -Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).
The commission further directed the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG) to write formally to dissociate itself from the action if it was not part of the ongoing strike.
“The unions are accordingly advised, a directive signed by the acting Executive Secretary of the NLC, Dr Bernice A. Welbeck, said.
Appearance
It said the NLC, in response to a notice to embark on an indefinite strike by the unions, summoned them and their employers to appear before it last Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at 2.00 p.m.
The summons, it said, further directed the unions to stay their intended action and any other action and appear as scheduled.
“When the case was called today, TUAAG, only one of the four aggrieved Complainant Unions that signed the notice appeared.
They were represented by TUAAG Local President, Takoradi and Local Vice-Chairman of Accra, who announced that they were representing the national president.”
“The three other Unions – SSA-UoG, TEWU-TUC and FUSSAG failed and/or refused to appear,” it said.
The directive said the respondents were represented by the Deputy Director-General, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and a Senior Legal Officer of Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), among others.
It said the TUAAG representatives who appeared informed the commission that they were not on strike.
“This is notwithstanding the fact that the notice to strike was signed by TUAAG and the three other unions.”
The respondent, it said, confirmed that the SSA-UoG declared an indefinite strike on February 3, 2026 “and by extension all the other unions were on strike”.
Strike
The three unions began an indefinite strike last Tuesday, February 3, 2026, due to what they described as a unilateral move by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to alter previously agreed conditions of service.
They expressed concern about the replacement of overtime allowances with a call-in allowance.
According to them, the decision violated an earlier agreement signed in 2021.
In addition, the three labour unions demanded the payment of salary arrears owed to employees of institutions recently upgraded to full university status.
They also demanded the payment of five months of outstanding Tier Two pension contributions.
These were contained in a joint statement signed by SSA-UoG National Chairman, George Ansong, FUSSAG General Secretary Jonathan Kabu, and TEWU-TUC National Chairperson Salamatu Mahamah Brimah.
