Bawumia Donates GH¢200,000 To Madina Market Fire Victims

On Friday morning, Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia visited the Madina market in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality, Greater Accra Region, to express sympathy to the affected traders.

He donated GH¢200,000 to support the traders whose shops were affected by the fire that broke out on April 10, 2024.

Over 110 fire victims who lost valuables in the incident will also receive support through the Women’s Empowerment Fund of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA).

Dr. Bawumia, addressing the spirited traders, mentioned that after learning about the fire, he quickly had a contractor assess the situation and provide estimates. He assured them that the design would be ready, and work would begin soon.

At the meeting were market leaders, fire victims, firefighters, police, officers from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and other security personnel. Dr. Bawumia, speaking in Twi, informed the traders that 120 stores and 78 small shops would be built according to the new market designs.

“After the construction, traders whose goods were ravaged by the fire will be assisted by the GEA CEO, Kosi Yankey. You will be supported with the women’s empowerment fund so that you can continue with your work. We have all your names,” he announced, assuring that “We want the contractor to work in earnest while Kosi Yankey, the CEO of the GEA, ensures you get the money.”

While expressing sympathy to the fire victims, Dr. Bawumia also took the opportunity to advise all traders to invest in fire insurance. This way, in case of fire outbreaks, insurance companies would be available to assist them. Additionally, he encouraged traders to hire qualified electricians for electrical connections in their shops.
