Ashanti Regional Minister Claims Sabotage in ECG Power Supply
Simon Osei-Mensah, the regional minister for Ashanti, is accusing the area’s power supply of sabotage.
According to the Minister, there were screws keeping the metal frames of eight pylons in place that were tampered with. If these pylons had collapsed, the area would have become completely black.
What he said:
“One of the other reasons I decided that no, they would have to write statements. This is the unfortunate situation that happened, for which bows and nods holding the metal frames to the concrete pillar of eight pylons were removed.
“I can tell you, except for people who have deep professional knowledge in electricity, that can do that and all these eight pylons fell. We were just fortunate all the eight did not fall on adjourning pylons, else about half of the region could have been in total darkness,”
His remarks come amid escalating hostilities in the area between him and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The conflict started when Mr. Osei-Mensah reported Ashanti East General Manager Michael Asomani Wiafe to the police for refusing to reestablish the Kumasi Technical University (KTU) electricity supply after it had been shut off due to a GH¢600,000 debt.
Since then, ECG employees have insisted that the minister issue an apology and drop the police complaint against their management.
The minister, however, has declined, stating that he was merely carrying out his obligation.
Employees of ECG have vowed not to accept invitations from the Ashanti Regional Minister after Mr. Osei-Mensah declined to apologize.
