NPP’s Kwabena Boateng Secures Victory In Ejisu by-election

In the Ejisu by-election, Kwabena Boateng of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has won handily.

While Mr. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, an Independent Candidate, received 21, 534 votes, or 43.3% of the total, Mr. Boateng received 27, 782 votes, or 55.8% of the total votes cast.

Beatrice Boakye of the Liberal Party, meanwhile, received 140 votes, or 0.3% of the total. With 89 votes, or 0.2% of the total, Esther Osei of the Convention People’s Party came up 5th.

With 222 votes, or 0.4% of the total, independent candidates Joseph Agyemang and Atakora Joseph received 23 votes each.

Following the death of Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament, on March 7, 2024, a by-election was held.

The Ejisu by-election witnessed intense competition, notably between Kwabena Aduomi, an Independent Candidate, and Kwabena Boateng, a former three-time NPP member of parliament for the seat. Both candidates rallied fervently for support, engaging in rigorous campaigns to sway voters their way.

However, amidst the electoral fervor, accusations of vote-buying emerged against Kwabena Boateng’s campaign. These allegations cast a shadow over the electoral process, raising concerns about the integrity of the election and the fairness of the competition. Such accusations prompted a closer scrutiny of the electoral proceedings.

In response to the bribery suspicions, the Electoral Commission took swift action by dismissing two temporary employees implicated in the scandal. The move came after a widely circulated video purportedly showed these individuals accepting bribes during the Ejisu by-election. The incident underscored the importance of upholding transparency and accountability in electoral processes to maintain public trust in democracy.
