EC Allows Political Party Agents At Vote Transfer Centers Again

The earlier order prohibiting political party agents from witnessing the vote transfer procedure has been rescinded by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Due to violent incidents at several places, the EC directed in a memo sent to its district officials on Sunday, June 2, that political party operatives be denied access to the transfer centers.

Numerous political parties and civil society organizations strongly objected to this decision, claiming that it violated the democratic process and would cause anomalies in the vote transfer procedure.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, asserted in a Facebook post that the EC’s ruling suggested an effort to work with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the general elections scheduled for December 7.

However, the EC declared its judgment to be reversed at a news conference on Tuesday, June 4.

Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, said that lengthy discussions with political parties preceded the decision to suspend the restriction.
