Damaged Train Repair Cost Estimated At $2.1 Million
Following a thorough evaluation, state prosecutors informed the Accra High Court that Polish evaluators had calculated the state’s repair costs for the derelict train.
For damaging a brand-new train that was supposed to travel the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, four accused parties are on trial.
The state produced a fresh charge sheet in court on Thursday, removing the previous one.
In the new charge sheet, the prosecution said that on the day of the accident, the first accused bought concrete blocks in Juapong and transported them to Abutia, both in the Volta region.
After delivering the blocks, the accused and his colleagues tried to cross the railway as a shortcut. They piled stones on the tracks to help the truck cross, but the truck got stuck.
At the same time, the Railway Authority was testing a train on that track, leading to a collision.
The state claims this caused $2,138,466.66 in damage to the train.
Four charges have been brought against the four accused: using a railway line in violation of the Railway Act; helping to put people in danger on the train; using the railway line in violation of the Railway Act; placing stones in the railway line without authorization; and causing unlawful damage.
They entered not guilty pleas to each of the four charges.
The court has given the four accused men a 200.000 cedis bail with one surety to be justified, despite the state’s plea for them to be remanded to Nsawam jail.
June 27 is the next date for the sitting on the trial.
