The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has emphasized that military personnel must not be deployed to voting centres in the general elections scheduled for December 7.
The Speaker discloses that his team will confer with the President, representatives of the different political parties, security agencies, and other relevant parties regarding strategies to guarantee impartial, equitable, and legitimate elections.
Tuesday, June 11, in his inaugural speech to the legislature, Bagbin stated that unless they are called upon to handle an emergency, the military should avoid polling places and voting centers.
The Speaker spoke:
“We don’t want to see [the] military during the election. When there is a need to call them, they will be called, but they should not be at polling or voting centres.
“Honourable members, the clergy and notable civil society leaders will be actively involved. The signs and signals of happiness in the country are not those of assurance and hope.”
