Prof. Opoku-Agyemang Honoured With A Title By Traditional Council

In recognition of her enormous commitment to development, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, running mate of National Democratic Congress presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama, has been awarded a traditional leadership title.

During the weekend, the inhabitants of Sankana in the Upper West region celebrated the Kalibi Tigri Festival, and as part of the festivities, the Sankana Traditional Council gave her the honorary title of Pognaa Piirima, Dagaare for “Mother of the Rocks.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang visited the Wa market while in the area, where she spoke with residents who were thrilled to see the distinguished stateswoman.

Paramount Chief Naa Pagranige Saakoe Mornah III praised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang for her dedication to Sankana and her contributions to education and development in the region. He stated that the title signifies a deep bond and mutual respect, calling her “Mother of the Rocks.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed her heartfelt connection to Sankana, noting its sentimental value as the site of her early research.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang spoke about her relationship to Sankana and the advancements made to the region’s educational infrastructure while serving as President John Mahama’s deputy. She emphasised how important the distinction was to her as she graciously accepted it.

She stated:

“I look forward to contributing even more to the progress of Sankana, and invite everyone to join me to celebrate these wonderful people,” Prof Opoku-Agymang wrote in a statement following her enskinment.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang recently was also enskinned as a Development Queen mother in the Samini Traditional Area of the newly created North East Region, with the title “Ziiniaya Daana,” meaning “Queen of Development and Light.”
