$14 Million Tuna Cold Store Project Opened In Tema

One of the top seafood producers in the world, Thai Union Group, has established a $14 million cold storage facility for tuna in Tema, within the Greater Accra Region, with the goal of revolutionizing the local fishing business and optimizing the available fisheries resources.

Improved post-harvest technology is fully installed in the 8,000-tonne facility, which is essential for preserving fish quality and guaranteeing food safety.

In order to minimize energy usage and cut waste, it also integrates energy-efficient technologies.

At the facility’s opening, Thai Union Group CEO, Khun Thirapong Chansiri, highlighted it as the company’s first major investment since 2010. He emphasized the facility’s role in supporting the growing tuna industry by using advanced refrigeration to improve product preservation, reduce spoilage, and enhance food safety, boosting competitiveness in global markets.

Deputy Fisheries Minister Abdul-Aziz Ayaba Musah highlighted high post-harvest losses in the fisheries sector due to inadequate storage. These losses reduce fish availability and economic returns. He stressed the importance of proper storage to maintain quality and market value and praised the new facility for its role in improving food preservation. Musah affirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for private sector investment and sustainable industrial growth in fisheries.

The deputy minister said:

“I once again commend you for your unwavering dedication to excellence and innovation. Your efforts are not only setting new standards in the industry but also inspiring other businesses to invest in advanced technologies and sustainable practices in the fisheries sector.

“As we celebrate this milestone, let us recognise that this is just the beginning. The benefits of this facility will be felt for years to come, driving growth and development in our fisheries sector and beyond,”
