On Monday, August 19, 2024, SONABEL, the Burkina Faso Power Utility, claims it will start releasing water from the Bagre Dam.
The White Volta Basin Secretariat of the Water Resources Commission’s Basin Director, Jesse Kazapoe, signed and copied a statement to the Ghana News Agency stating that the latest information from SONABEL shows that the dam’s water level is at 232.8 meters and continues to rise.
The announcement also stated that the White Volta River in Ghana is predicted to breach its banks and occupy its typical flood basins as a result of the spill.
Thus, the statement recommended that people take preventive action to avoid being negatively impacted by the spill, particularly those who lived and worked near the White Volta River’s banks.
The statement added:
“The Water Resources Commission has been advised by SONABEL, the Power Utility of Burkina Faso on Friday, August 16th, 2024, that the level of water in the Bagre Dam has been rising since Friday, August 2nd, 2024”,
“This is to inform you of your further action relating to flood management. We will furnish you with additional information on this matter as this becomes available to us,”
