Today, Tuesday, September 17, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will protest the Electoral Commission (EC) with a statewide march.
After alleging several irregularities, including the unlawful but widespread transfer of votes in multiple locations, the NDC is accusing the EC of not granting permission for a forensic audit of the voter registration before to the elections in December.
In its explanation that the purpose of the exhibition of the register, as required by law (C.I. 91 (as amended by C.I. 126)), is to assist with corrections, the EC has maintained that all necessary corrections in the register have been made following its presentation of the provisional register.
On Monday, September 9, the NDC’s national chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, announced the protest, citing the party’s dissatisfaction with the way the EC handled the election process.
He also raised concerns about openness by expressing frustration with what he claimed to be the absence of updates on investigations into the theft of some Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).
The Ghana Police Service has provided rules to maintain safety and order ahead of the event.
They emphasized the need of nonviolent protests and asked participants to adhere to predetermined routes and schedules.
Throughout the protest, the police issued a warning against using any kind of violence or causing property damage, threatening to prosecute those who did so.
To keep the peace, security guards will be positioned along the protest routes.
