Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Minister of Works and Housing, has unveiled a significant effort to aid those affected by the recent Akosombo Dam disaster.
As part of the plan, the government would construct 1,000 dwelling units to accommodate those affected by the disaster.
On Monday, September 30, Mr. Nkrumah reiterated the government’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of the displaced during a press conference in Accra. He emphasized that providing suitable home is a crucial first step in assisting them in getting over the aftermath.
The Minister underlined that the project, which aims to provide immediate assistance to individuals in need, is a major priority for the government.
Apart from the first batch of 1,000 units, he declared that a subsequent phase comprising 1,010 additional units has been approved.
This demonstrates the government’s sustained commitment to meeting the impacted communities’ housing requirements.
The project may move on because it has already obtained the certificate of commencement for the second phase.
In the interim, in order to start building, the government is finishing up necessary processes with the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and resolving land acquisition disputes.
Oppong Nkrumah added that 115 dwelling units are currently being built, with more than 60% of them finished.
“These are the units I broke ground for in April 2024. Phase 2, with 1,010 additional units, has also been approved, and we have received the commencement certificate.”
