A monitoring app is being released by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to make reporting occurrences involving reckless driving easier.
14,135 traffic accidents occurred in Ghana in 2023, resulting in 2,276 fatalities and 15,409 injuries.
Acting Board Chairman Mr. Jeremaine Nkrumah announced the app’s launch to address this expanding problem and asked drivers to exercise caution while speaking at the NRSA’s 25th anniversary in Accra.
15,409 people were injured in 20,23 as a result of 14,135 traffic crashes, according to the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
Acting NRSA Board Chairman Jeremaine Nkrumah noted that although there has been a decrease in accidents this year, the death toll is still quite high. “This year, the number is 1,614, as you can see.” There are 1,000 more funerals, not simply a certain amount. Spouses, kids, and everything.
These aren’t just numbers to me; these are people, and every time this occurs, people come together to grieve. We have a responsibility to ensure that traffic laws are obeyed,” he remarked.
In an attempt to reduce these terrible deaths, he said that commercial trucks were mostly to blame for the fatalities and advised drivers to drive more cautiously.
He displayed a graph that indicated a modest decline in accidents over time.
Mabel Sagoe, the chief director of the Transport Ministry, acknowledged that increased public education had led to a decrease in traffic accidents, but she also stressed the need of using creative, data-driven tactics to achieve even larger reductions.
Several noteworthy actions were mentioned, including the digital platform for commercial transport organizations, the start of the Ghana transport project, and the “Arrive Alive Stay Alive” road safety campaign.
The theme for the jubilee was “25 years of awarding excellence and promoting road safety.”
