Parliament Sittings Suspended Indefinitely

On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, adjourned the House indefinitely.

Following the dispute surrounding the announcement of four seats as vacant, the decision was made.

The Speaker did not disclose the number of MPs in attendance, but stated that the House lacks a quorum to conduct business for the day.

Mr. Bagbin did admit, though, that he had received a message from the Supreme Court asking him to halt the implementation of the announcement of the open seats.

This followed a heated morning in the Chamber as members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) argued over the makeup of the Majority.

Prior to the Speaker’s arrival, the NPP MPs left the room.

A number of government matters, including the vote on account, are left in suspense as a result of this adjournment, leaving the 2025 first quarter budget in limbo.
