Armed Men Blocks Bolgatanga-Tamale Highway And Assault Passengers
A group of armed men attacked passengers and set a car on fire while blocking the Bolgatanga-Tamale route close to Gbimsi in the North East Region.
According to a report by Accra-based Citi FM, the attackers, who were armed with AK-47 rifles and other advanced weapons, stopped cars in order to look for passengers from Bawku.
The recent resurgence of the Bawku chieftaincy war, which has intensified since Saturday, October 26, is connected to this escalation.
According to reports, the armed individuals attacked multiple passengers and set fire to one car.
One survivor recounted the incident: “I went to Tamale airport this morning to drop someone. On my way back, at Gbimsi, I saw people holding guns and blocking the road. They were burning tyres and said they were looking for Kusasis. They screened me, and I was allowed to pass when I indicated I am not a Kusasi. I saw them beating someone but couldn’t see how it ended.”
Tensions from the recent Bawku skirmishes have damaged the community of Gbimsi, which is primarily Mamprusi.
The North East Regional Police Command has not yet responded to requests for comment.
