The House will meet again at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 7, 2024, as called by Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin.
The Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre will host the session, where lawmakers will resume important talks that have been put on hold for a number of weeks.
The decision to reconvene comes after a lengthy standoff that was brought on by the Speaker’s decision about open seats in Parliament. The Majority caucus fiercely reacted to Speaker Bagbin’s declaration that the seats for Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West were vacant, claiming that the Speaker’s actions compromised their representation.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin filed a writ ahead of the Speaker’s announcement, causing the Supreme Court to step in and issue a stay.
In addition to highlighting the continuous conflicts between the Majority and Minority factions in Parliament, this decision essentially restored the contested seats temporarily.
When the Speaker adjourned the session after the Minority caucus gained control of the Majority side of the House, using their numerical advantage as a result of the Speaker’s decision, the situation became even more heated.
The operational integrity of Parliament was called into question by this extraordinary action, and a prompt resolution was required to restore order.
A recall of Parliament was called by the Majority in response to the ongoing impasse. They insisted on meeting again since there were pressing legislative issues that needed to be addressed right away.
The Majority emphasized the need to resume legislative business to ensure that critical policies and programs are not stalled.
