Cholera Outbreak In Central Region: 7 Deaths In 47 Cases, 720 More Suspected

Since Thursday, October 31, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported 720 suspected cases, 47 confirmed cases, and seven fatalities of cholera in the Central Region.

Eight of the 22 districts in the area—Awutu-Senya-East and West, Gomoa East, Mfantseman, Gomoa West, Agona West, Cape Coast, and Twifo-Hemang-Lawyer-Denkyira—have reported the incidents.

The deaths were reported in the districts of Gomoa West, Assin North and South, and Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality, though the gender of the deceased was not specified.

This was revealed by Dr. Agnes Achiama Anane, the GHS’s Acting Regional Director, on Monday, November 18, at a news briefing regarding the cholera outbreak in the area.

According to her, the deaths could have been avoided because three of the patients were already dead when they arrived at the medical facilities, while four of the patients arrived late and in critical condition.

Urgent requests for preventive actions to stop future transmission have been sparked by the current scenario, highlighting the importance of the public following hygienic practices that were common during the COVID-19 pandemic.

These steps, which are thought to be essential in preventing the disease’s transmission, include frequent hand washing, the use of sanitizers, and careful handling of food and water.

In order to lower the risk of serious sickness or death from cholera, Dr. Anane emphasized the significance of obtaining immediate medical attention at healthcare facilities when suffering symptoms like acute diarrhea and dehydration.

As they remained attentive in maintaining good environmental sanitation to prevent the spread of the disease, Dr. Anane further urged the inhabitants to prioritize healthy eating habits and maintain impeccable hygiene standards.

According to her, the clear appeal is for neighboring areas to act together in concert in order to effectively limit the disease.
