The Ghana Police Service has urged independent candidates and political parties to control their expectations for the 2024 elections, emphasizing the value of preserving peace and stability in what is anticipated to be a close race.
This statement was given on November 21 at a police briefing detailing the force’s election preparations, which included members from all political parties.
Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare promised during his speech that the police would respond professionally to any electoral violence, taking the necessary steps to defuse or intensify the situation as needed.
“With the 13 or the 12, whichever it is, there is one clear thing, only one will win, the rest will not win. In the same way, the 801 vying for the position of 276 seats, only and I repeat only 276 will win, the rest will not win. We need to come to this realisation and therefore measure our expectations.
“If I want to be very blunt, I will say that as you plan to celebrate your possible victory, plan to celebrate your defeat or endure your defeat. So at the end of the day, Ghana and only Ghanaians will win in this election as we have said”, he stated.
