Police Stop Bus Transporting 1,800 Rounds Of Ammunition
Yesterday, the Bawku Divisional Police Command stopped a Yutong bus that was transporting 1,800 rounds of ammunition at the Customs barrier in Binguri, which is located in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.
The Bawku Divisional Police Command has arrested the driver (name withheld) and seized the bus, registered GW 6471-22, which was traveling from Kumasi to Bawku.
The Ghanaian Times was informed by a source close to the Divisional Police Command that the police had responded to a tip and that the driver had been placed under arrest pending further investigation after submitting a cautionary statement.
The source stated that the police had the ammo, but it was unable to provide an estimated time of the driver’s court appearance.
The Times writer had made numerous failed attempts to contact Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Adamu Seidu, the Bawku Divisional Police Commander.
In a news release, the Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) denounced the ammunition’s transit and urged the security forces—especially the police and Ministry of National Security—to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
“We commend the security agencies for their diligence and swift action in seizing the bus carrying ammunition,” said a statement signed by MAYA President Awudu Bagura.
In order to determine the origin of the ammunition, the people or organizations involved, and the consignment’s planned use, the group demanded investigations.
Mr. Bagura urged the government and security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering and monitor transport routes in the country to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
