The Ghana Police Service declared that it is looking into an incident involving Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s convoy. Professor Opoku-Agyemang is the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) running mate for the general election in 2024.
The police gave preliminary information on the incident and promised a comprehensive investigation in a news release released on Sunday, December 1.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident occurred along the Akosombo-Accra Highway in the Eastern Region, between Akuse and Kpong, the statement said.
A dispatch rider reportedly threw something at the windscreen of one of the cars in Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s convoy as he approached from the other direction.
The car’s windscreen sustained severe damage in the collision, raising questions about safety and security of political figures amidst the campaign season.
The public has assurance by the police that they commit to carrying out a thorough investigation and that they were treating the situation seriously. They emphasized that every attempt will be made to track down and capture the perpetrator.
Additionally, the security agency stated that the offender will face the full force of the law upon his discovery.
As the nation gets closer to the December elections, this event has spurred conversations about the necessity of more stringent security measures for political convoys.
The police urged the public to keep composure while the inquiry is underway and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding law and order and public safety.
