Parliament Returns To Session Today After Historic 2024 Elections.

The first meeting of Parliament following the historic general elections held on December 7 is scheduled for today, Monday, December 16, 2024, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

This meeting comes after the Speaker’s Office confirmed the meeting venue in an official circular on December 11.

In a previous notification dated December 2, 2024, Speaker Alban Bagbin called on Parliament to reconvene, stressing the significance of this meeting in view of recent political events.

Ghana’s political landscape changed after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won a parliamentary majority in the elections held on December 7.

The balance of power in the legislature has changed as a result of the loss of several prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) members of parliament, notably Andy Appiah Kubi, Henry Quartey, KT Hammond, and Ursula Owusu-Ekulful.

The NDC’s electoral victory carried over to the presidential contest, where John Dramani Mahama defeated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s nominee.

Speaker Bagbin had been pushed to recall Parliament for important legislative problems on several occasions prior to the elections by the Majority Caucus, which was led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Speaker Bagbin, however, turned down these pleas, insisting that legislative business would not resume until after the elections.

Lawmakers debated this choice, with some raising concerns about the recall’s timing and governance ramifications.

Critical post-election concerns, including as the transition to a new administration and talks on important legislative goals for the next government, are anticipated to be covered in today’s session.
