Workers On Ofankor-Nsawam Project Stage Protest Over Unpaid Salaries.
On the Ofankor to Nsawam restoration project, more than 600 casual employees are requesting reimbursement for three months’ worth of unpaid wages.
The employees, who have put down their tools, are demanding that their bosses pay the unpaid balances right away. For commuters who depend on the road, their action has caused a major disruption as it has brought the project to a complete halt.
Anefi Andor, the leader of the upset workers, told Citi News that life is intolerable under the current circumstances and described the hardships he and his coworkers have experienced as a result of their wages not being paid.
“For them to pay us, they packed all the needed materials to the yard and told us that they had closed the project without giving us any notification. The majority of us were at home and they chose only a few people to undertake such a task.
“Up till now, they have not even decided to pay us and they keep telling us they have no money and we are getting into the Christmas festivity. We left our families to come here. They have been calling us, but we don’t have money.
“But for them, they get to eat three times a day and they kept us in a workers’ house, starving us for about three weeks. So, we are here to take our money from them,” he stated.
The government’s intention to dualize the whole Accra-Kumasi route includes the Ofankor to Nsawam rehabilitation project.
