SHS Heads Call For Postponement Of Reopening Due To Outstanding Debts

As they get ready to reopen for the 2025 school year, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has made a plea to the Ministry of Education, requesting the prompt release of unpaid funds that are essential to the efficient operation of Senior High Schools throughout Ghana.

The conference cited previous correspondences dated September 20, 2024, and August 12, 2024, as well as promises made by the Minister of Education during a Zoom meeting on December 18, 2024, all of which were not carried out, according to a statement signed by Primus Baro, National Secretary of CHASS.

The government’s arrears on unpaid utility bills and perishable goods, among other things, continue to impede the operation of SHSs nationwide, according to CHASS’s communiqué.

The group emphasized how important these monies are to guaranteeing that schools can reopen on January 3, 2025, as planned. According to CHASS, school administrators will have a very difficult time maintaining infrastructure, delivering high-quality instruction, and ensuring the welfare of their pupils without these resources.

Therefore, in order to guarantee a smooth operation, CHASS is advising the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to give the disbursement of the money top priority.
