Tensions flared in Ejura, Ashanti Region, on Saturday, January 11, as an enraged mob attacked the local police station, freeing remand prisoners and setting the building on fire.
The unrest was triggered by news that a young man, recently arrested for alleged phone theft, had died while in police custody. The deceased had voluntarily reported himself to the police, promising to return the next morning to assist with the investigation.
When the youth learned of his death, they stormed the station in protest, demanding justice and accountability. Armed soldiers were deployed to the scene and had to fire warning shots to disperse the irate crowd.
Authorities are investigating the incident, which has left the community in shock and raised questions about custodial conditions and police transparency.
