University of Ghana SRC raises concerns over increased residential facility user fees

The Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana has expressed deep concerns over the recent 20% increase in Residential Facility User Fees (RFUF) for traditional halls of residence.

The increase, announced by the Public Affairs Directorate, was attributed to a rise in electricity tariffs and the need for improved maintenance of student facilities. This change follows the government’s decision to cease covering electricity bills for the traditional halls, leaving the halls responsible for their own energy costs.

As a result of the hike, incoming Level 100 students will now pay GHS 3,000 instead of the previous GHS 2,500, while continuing students are required to pay GHS 1,500, up from GHS 1,000, for the upcoming semester.

In response, the SRC has initiated an emergency Executive Committee (EXECOM) meeting, involving Junior Common Room (JCR) Presidents and other key stakeholders, to deliberate on the matter. The council has also commenced engagements with relevant parties in hopes of negotiating a reduction in the fees.

In a statement signed by SRC President Maradona Adjei Yeboah, the council emphasized its commitment to protecting the interests of students. “The SRC remains resolute in manifesting the interest of students at all costs,” the statement read.

The issue has sparked significant discussion among the student body, with many awaiting further developments as the SRC pursues legal and administrative solutions.
