Professor Joshua Alabi has been named Chairman of the Board of Directors and an Independent Non-Executive Director of Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB).
Subject to shareholder approval at the bank’s next Annual General Meeting and the required regulatory approvals from the Bank of Ghana and other pertinent authorities, the appointment is effective immediately.
Mr. Daniel Kwaku Tweneboah Asirifi, who recently resigned as the Board’s Chairman and Director, is replaced by Professor Alabi.
Professor Alabi has more than thirty years of expertise in academia, public service, and corporate governance, according to a statement from GCB.
Renowned for his visionary leadership and strategic acumen, he has made significant contributions to various institutions and sectors, both in Ghana and internationally, according to a statement issued by the bank.
Professor Alabi is a former Chairman of HFC Bank, as well as having held several other prestigious roles, including:
- Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT)
- Chairman of the Accra Polytechnic Governing Council (now Accra Technical University)
- Chairman of the Ghana Book Development Council
He is also well-known for having served as the University of Professional Studies, Accra’s (UPSA) vice-chancellor.
Apart from his achievements in academia and business, Professor Alabi has a long history of serving the public.
In addition to holding ministerial positions for the Northern Region and Greater Accra, he was a member of parliament for the Krowor Constituency.
