University of Ghana Opens New Hall To Tackle Housing Issues

The Diamond Jubilee Hall, the University of Ghana’s newest student housing complex, was put into service to help ease the campus’s ongoing housing shortage. This problem has been a big worry, especially for new students, and it comes up at the start of every school year.

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the current vice chancellor, is leading a number of initiatives, including the building of the Diamond Jubilee Hall. The facility was entirely financed by the University’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) and was constructed employing a creative, economical construction style.

The GHS 55 million completed hall provides a range of lodging alternatives, including 184 double rooms with shared restrooms on each floor and 64 rooms with a common bathroom.

Students can also recharge using a planned vending system because each room has its own electrical meter. To guarantee prompt maintenance issue resolution, the hall has administrative offices and a maintenance unit. To improve student convenience, a mini-mart and a washing bay will be installed in the upcoming months.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo highlighted the project’s importance during her remarks at the commissioning event, saying that it is in line with the University’s strategic aim of improving the student experience. She also emphasized the difficulties encountered during building, especially the financial and legal obstacles.

This project began in late 2021 when I assumed office, and at the time, the Africa Integras litigation was a significant obstacle. As a result, no one wanted to take on an unfinished project entangled in legal disputes. We, therefore, decided to use the University’s IGF to address this accommodation issue,” she explained.

Professor Amfo assured students that the hall would soon be available for occupancy, with details on the application process to be communicated in due course. She urged students to take good care of the facility, as it was designed with their comfort in mind.

We have provided everything necessary to make life comfortable for our students, and we urge them to be responsible stewards of this facility,” she added.
