A Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko SC and Nsoatreman FC turned tragic as a supporter of the visiting team lost his life following violent clashes at the Nana Koramansah Park.
According to an official statement from Asante Kotoko, the supporter, who had traveled from Kumasi to back the team, was fatally stabbed during the chaos that erupted around the match. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The club described the loss as “devastating” and extended its deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and the entire Kotoko fraternity.
Eyewitness reports suggest that tensions flared even before the match began, with sections of the home crowd engaging in confrontations with Kotoko’s players and officials. During the game, missiles were allegedly thrown at the Kotoko bench multiple times, creating an unsafe environment for the visiting team. The situation escalated when Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara, was physically attacked by pitch invaders, further intensifying the hostilities.
The violence was not limited to the playing field. Media personnel covering the game and traveling supporters were also reportedly attacked, with some sustaining injuries. In addition to the tragic loss of life, Kotoko’s technical team suffered extensive damage to their equipment, including laptops and communication devices, which were destroyed during the chaos.
Asante Kotoko has called for swift and firm action from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible for the violence are held accountable. The club emphasized the urgent need for stronger security measures at league venues to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The GFA is yet to comment on the incident, but there are growing calls from the football fraternity for decisive action to curb hooliganism in the Ghanaian league.
Meanwhile, the identity of the deceased supporter has not yet been disclosed, as authorities work to notify his family. Football fans and stakeholders across the country have expressed their condolences and called for justice in the wake of this tragic incident.
