The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has unreservedly apologised to Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, the Clerk of the Appointments Committee, following controversial remarks he made during a committee sitting.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Afenyo-Markin admitted that his outburst may have been inappropriate and retracted his comments.
His apology comes after he accused Ms. Jiagge-Gobah of acting at the whims of the Majority and allegedly referred to her as a “typical NDC member.” His remarks sparked backlash, with several MPs, including Kwame Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways, and Bernard Ahiafor, the Second Deputy Speaker, condemning his comments and demanding an apology.
In response to the criticisms, Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed regret for any distress caused to Mrs. Jiagge-Gobah and her family.
“If my outpour caused the family any trauma, I unreservedly apologise… To her husband, I unreservedly apologise. To her children, I unreservedly apologise,” he stated.
He further indicated that he would write a formal statement to apologise to the Clerk subsequently.
His decision to apologise was revered by Members of Parliament
