Ohwim Chief Destooled By Asantehene Over Numerous Charges

Due to the accusations made against him during the Kumasi Traditional Council meeting, the Asantehene deposed the Chief of Ohwim in the Ashanti Region.

In a chieftaincy case, Nana Kusi Baaye II, the Ohwimhene for 16 years, was charged with extortion, illicit mining, and selling land without permission, including cemetery lands.

However, the primary reason he was called to the traditional council meeting was the careless use of the Asantehene’s Great Oath (Ntamkese), which amounted to desecrating the Golden Stool and misleading the Otumfuo.

You vowed with the Great Oath to be truthful, but you went against it. You don’t deserve to stay on the stool. Many have sacrificed to protect the Golden Stool, I won’t allow you to destroy it,” said the Asantehene.

In the process of hearing his case, other individuals, including the chief’s own family head and members of his royal family, leveled additional allegations, including testifying falsely in a chieftaincy dispute.

Sister of the Ohwimhene also accused him of selling family lands in the name of the Asantehene but later giving them out for illegal mining.

We were told that Otumfuo had taken the land for a solar project but realized that he was undertaking galamsey activities and destroyed the land,” said the sister.

The chief has been accused of being a Christian, refusing to execute the customary rites, and opposing the enstoolment of a queen, among other things.

The Kumasi Traditional Council’s Divisions unanimously called for Nana Kusi Baaye to be destooled for lying to the Asantehene.

The desecration of the Great Oath served as the basis for the Asantehene’s decision regarding the destoolment.
