Weija-Gbawe Residents Displaced As Tidal Waves Claim 40+ Houses

Residents of Kelee, a coastal town in the Greater Accra Region’s Weija Gbawe Municipality, fear losing their whole hamlet as more than 40 houses have been flooded by the approaching sea.

Affected neighbors told Citi News that they were becoming increasingly concerned about the sea’s quick invasion and warned that if nothing was done right away, the entire town would be destroyed.

The inhabitants claim that although the shoreline used to be more than 400 meters from their homes, the sea has since gotten dangerously near, engulfing houses and even a school that used to be part of the neighborhood.

Consequently, some pupils have been compelled to pursue their education in the nearby town of Wiaboman, according to Citi News.

Residents believe the connecting of the estuary into the sea as part of efforts to reduce the excess water from the Weija dam is the cause of the problem.

Principal Disaster Control Officer for the National Disaster Management Organization in Weija Ebenezer Boakye says the construction of a sea defense will address the issue.

“We are of the view that we need to be able to get something like sea defense to protect the people else in some few years to come, we may lose the whole township of Kelee.
