There is relief for National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cardholders as the Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has officially suspended its earlier decision to halt healthcare services to NHIS beneficiaries.
The suspension of services, which took effect on April 4, 2025, was a result of the delayed reimbursement of claims owed by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to private healthcare providers. The delay had caused financial distress among member facilities, prompting PHFAoG to take drastic action.
However, following a crucial meeting with NHIA officials, PHFAoG has received a firm assurance that payments for outstanding claims will be made by Monday, April 7, 2025. In response, the Association has decided to resume services to NHIS cardholders immediately.
“In a show of good faith, we have decided to suspend the ongoing action,” the statement from PHFAoG read. It further stated that the Association remains ready to take further action should the NHIA fail to fulfill its payment promise.
The Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr. Asare Bampoe, assured the leadership of PHFAoG of his commitment to implementing a smooth and prompt reimbursement system. He emphasized that this move is part of his broader vision to strengthen the healthcare system in Ghana.
PHFAoG has urged all private healthcare facilities nationwide to comply with this new directive and continue delivering services to NHIS patients, emphasizing the importance of providing care with humility and dedication.
The announcement comes as a major relief to thousands of NHIS cardholders who rely on private health facilities for medical care.
