Ghana to host Extraordinary ECOWAS Council of Ministers Meeting
Ghana to host Extraordinary ECOWAS Council of Ministers Meeting as part of 50th anniversary launch

Ghana will host an Extraordinary Meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers on April 22–23 in Accra, marking the official launch of the Community’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.
More than a ceremonial occasion, the launch presents a strategic moment to reflect on ECOWAS’ achievements over the past five decades and chart a path forward.
The meeting, bringing together Foreign Affairs and Finance Ministers from all member states, will focus on the recent withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—collectively known as the Alliance of Sahelian States—from ECOWAS.
The Ministers will prepare a comprehensive report for review by the Authority of Heads of State.
The event will follow the formal launch of the ECOWAS@50 celebrations on Tuesday, April 22, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
At a press briefing on Thursday, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa shared updates on preparations.
He revealed that both the anniversary theme and official logo will be unveiled during the launch.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, is expected to attend alongside all other ECOWAS heads of state. Representatives from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have also been invited.
“It is a great source of national pride that Ghana was chosen to host this historic event,” said Mr. Ablakwa. “This honour is a fitting tribute to Ghana’s legacy as a cradle of Pan-Africanism and a leader in regional integration.”
Established on May 28, 1975, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) aims to promote regional integration through policy harmonization, resource pooling, and collective efforts to address the region’s challenges.
