SkyTrain case: Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi pleads not guilty, granted GH¢10million bail

Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, a former Board Chairperson of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), was this morning hauled before the Accra High Court in a wheelchair to taken his plea in the case in which he has been accused of conspiring with the fund’s CEO to cause financial loss of $2million to the state in the sky train project.

Making his first appearance today(May 26), Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi,pleaded not guilty to a total of four counts of conspiring with former Chief Executive Officer of the GIIF, Solomon Asamoah to cause financial loss of $2million to the state, willfully causing financial loss to the state and intentional dissipation of public funds.

Making an oral bail application at the High Court presided over by Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame, counsel for the accused, Duke Aaron Sasu argued that his client was an 80-year-old distinguished academic and statesman who had devoted over 50 years of his life to public service in Ghana.

He further went ahead to list a litany of medial conditions (all withheld) his client praying the court to admit his client to bail with reasonable terms.

“My lady, these health circumstances would make a denial of bail particularly burdensome and poteintially dangerous to his well-being.

“My client has demonstrated unwavering commitment to this legal process. He’s responded to every invitation from National Investigation Bureau,” he prayed

The prosecution led by the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai was not opposed to the bail.

Justice Tasiame admitted Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi to bail in the sum of GHC 10 million with two sureties.

The sureties must provide justification with landed properties located in Accra.

They are also to deposit copies of their Ghana while Prof. Ameywaw-Akumfi is to deposit his passport and report to the investigators once every week.

The case has been adjourned to June 10, 2025.
