Ya-Na bans Fire Festival celebration in Tamale due to security concerns

The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, has banned this year’s Fire Festival celebration in the Tamale Metropolis due to security concerns.
The festival had been scheduled for Saturday night.
A statement issued by the Secretary to the Gbewa Palace, Abdul Rahaman Mohammed, explained that the decision was taken in consultation with the security agencies and relevant authorities, following emerging tensions among certain factions in the area.
It said the directive formed part of efforts to safeguard the peace and safety of residents.
The statement acknowledged the rich cultural heritage and deep significance of the Fire Festival to the people of Dagbon, but emphasised that the paramount concern at this time was the preservation of harmony and the prevention of any activities that could escalate tensions.
It urged all traditional leaders to promptly communicate this decision to their respective communities and to support measures aimed at maintaining calm and order during this period.
It further appealed to all residents to remain vigilant, cooperative, and committed to upholding the peace that is vital for the area’s progress and well-being.
“It is the hope of Ndan Ya-Na that the Fire Festival will resume in the near future under more favourable and peaceful circumstances,” the statement added.
Background
The Fire Festival, also known as Bugum Chugu, is a traditional celebration primarily observed by descendants of the Mole-Dagbon kingdom.
The festival commemorates a historic event in which a chief’s son went missing and was found at night using torches during the search.
Bugum Chugu marks the beginning of the Dagbon lunar year and serves as a time for cultural reaffirmation and community bonding.
