Government clears arrears for special schools

The government has disbursed GH¢8.98 million to special schools nationwide.

The amount is an accumulation of all outstanding arrears owed to the schools.

Promoting inclusivity

A statement signed and issued by the Head, Public Relations unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Daniel Fenyi, said the release marked a significant step towards supporting learners with special needs and promoting inclusive education.

The statement explained that the timely payment had brought relief to the institutions that had endured months of financial strain.

It explained that the funds, which had been delayed for several months, were expected to ease the financial pressure on the special schools and allow them to provide essential resources and care for learners with special needs.

“This disbursement demonstrates the government’s continued commitment to inclusive education and the well-being of learners with special needs,” the statement said.

Stakeholders in the education sector, particularly those involved in special needs education, have welcomed the payment, describing it as long overdue but highly commendable.

Appreciation

Heads of special schools expressed relief and appreciation, stating that the funds would help address immediate challenges such as feeding, teaching and learning materials, utilities and transportation.

The GES further praised the government for prioritising the needs of learners with disabilities and pledged to continue working closely with all stakeholders to ensure equitable access to education.

“We commend the government for prioritising Special Needs Education,” the statement said.

This payment came at a time when concerns had been raised about the neglect of Special Schools and the insufficient resources allocated to them.

Advocacy groups and education professionals had repeatedly called on the government to act swiftly, citing the negative impact of delayed funding on both learners and staff.

The GES reiterated its commitment to quality education for all, regardless of ability, and encouraged continued collaboration among stakeholders to promote an inclusive learning environment throughout Ghana.
