“Everything is going on smoothly as planned, and that is what we expect to make sure that at the end of the day, we have a very smooth and peaceful election,” the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has said.
The IGP said this on Tuesday during a visit to Akwatia to monitor the by-election where more than 50,000 voters are expected to cast their ballot across 119 polling stations to elect a new Member of Parliament to replace Ernest Kumi, who died after an illness.
The IGP commended the professionalism of security personnel, noting that regional commanders and members of the Police Management Board had joined officers on the ground. “I am very satisfied with the performance of my men,” he added.
Mr Yohuno said the lessons drawn from past election-related violence. “Ablekuma North violence is a thing of the past. We are moving forward. This election will set the tone for future elections,” he said.
While the process is largely calm, there are isolated incidents of tension.
