Student jailed 18 months for snatching phone at UMaT

The Tarkwa District Court Two has sentenced an 18-year-old student to 18 months’ imprisonment for snatching the mobile phone of a student at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa.
The convict, Bright Atanga, was charged with unlawful entry and stealing. He pleaded guilty to both counts.
Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Adwoa Yeboah told the court, presided over by Mr Isaac Osei Asare Esq., that the complainant, Samuel Dontoh, was a businessman residing at Nkamponase, while Atanga lived in Cyanide, both in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.
She explained that on April 14, 2025, the police received a distress call reporting that Atanga was being beaten by a mob at Nkamponase, near UMaT.
Police rushed to the scene, rescued Atanga, sent him to hospital for treatment, and later escorted him to the station for questioning.
The complainant later reported to the police that on his return from town, he was informed Atanga had jumped over his fence wall into his compound, but had been arrested by a mob.
According to Sergeant Yeboah, Atanga admitted the offence and confessed to snatching a mobile phone from a UMaT student. While being pursued by the victim, he scaled Dontoh’s fence wall in an attempt to take refuge.
The prosecutor said Atanga further claimed the mob apprehended him and seized the stolen phone.
