Kumasi schools, offices to be closed for Asantehemaa’s funeral

All educational institutions within the Kumasi Metropolis will be closed next Thursday, in line with the funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

Similarly, all offices, including banks and other financial institutions, are to be closed on that fateful day.

Also, there will be no commercial activity within Kumasi as all shops are to be closed as well.

These were contained in an elaborate programme announced by the Chairman of the Funeral Planning Committee,  Nana Effah Appenteng, during a media briefing yesteday, ahead of the four-day funeral rites of the late queen mother.

The funeral rites will begin on Monday, September 14 and end on Thursday, September 18, 2025.

Filing past from Monday-Wednesday begins from 5 a.m.-5 p.m., while Otumfuo Osei Tutu will also sit in state within the same period from 12 p.m.-5 p.m.

Specifically on Thursday, September 18, the filing past will start from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the burial service following afterwards at 3 p.m. at Dwabrem at the Manhyia Palace.

All mourners and visitors desirous of filing past the queen mother’s body are expected to accord her the needed respect and dignity, while females are barred from wearing headgear and jewellery.

Caution

Nana Appenteng advised the people to stay indoors throughout the night on Thursday, September 18, as Asantehemaa would be transported to Bantama Mausoleum (Ban mu), then to Breman Mausoleum for burial.

Similarly, he cautioned mourners against taking photographs while filing past the remains of the Asantehemaa, noting that such an act would violate the customs and traditions of Asanteman. He urged everyone to strictly observe the rules governing the rites in honour of the Asantehemaa.

Also, he warned that whoever would be caught defying the directive by taking videos and pictures of the Asantehemaa would be dealt with severely.

He further urged media personnel to secure accreditation tags to ensure easy access to designated areas, warning that unaccredited practitioners would not be permitted in certain sections of the grounds.

Nana Effah Appenteng, who is also the Paramount Chief of the Bompata Traditional Area, announced that large screens would be mounted at strategic locations within the Palace to enable everyone to catch a glimpse of the event and to prevent mourners from loitering about at the venue.

Kumasi is ready

Residents in Kumasi are ready for the funeral as they are preparing feverishly to participate in the funeral in honour of the late Asantehemaa.

Many public places, including traffic intersections and roundabouts, have been draped with black and red.
