The Member of Parliament for Trobu in the Greater Accra Region, Gloria Owusu, has declared her firm support for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as the “people’s choice” to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general election.
Speaking during Dr Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region on Friday, the MP said the former Vice President continues to enjoy overwhelming backing from both party stakeholders and grassroots supporters across the region.
“For us in Amasaman, Trobu, Anyaa Sowutuom and Dome Kwabenya, all that we are saying is we assure you of our unflinching support and we will work very hard to get you elected as our Flagbearer,” she said.
Madam Owusu recounted an encounter at the Dome Market, where she said market women passionately expressed their preference for Dr Bawumia and urged party leaders not to make the wrong decision in choosing a flagbearer.
“I was at the Dome Market the other time to buy something and when the market women recognised me, a number of them came around and mobbed me. What I am saying, God is my witness. They cautioned me that if we, the NPP, make any mistake and don’t bring Dr Bawumia, we will see what will happen in 2028. They said they don’t want anyone who will come and be insulting people,” she recounted.
The Trobu legislator dismissed claims that Dr Bawumia was to blame for the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections, insisting that the loss stemmed from internal neglect and disconnection within the party rather than from its flagbearer.
“I believe strongly that our 2024 election loss was not caused by the candidate. Our attitude to our own supporters caused our defeat,” she stated.
Her endorsement adds to recent support Dr Bawumia has received fron some MPs as he intensifies his campaign to secure the NPP’s presidential nomination for the 2028 elections. Several other party members and stakeholders also lauded his leadership qualities and urged delegates to back him.
