Ablakwa Criticizes Government’s Passport Fee Hike
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, has voiced strong opposition to the decision by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to increase passport application fees. This discontent arose following the Ministry’s announcement on April 1 regarding a significant hike in passport fees.
Under the new fee structure, the cost for obtaining a 32-page booklet has surged from GH¢100 to ¢500, while the fee for a 48-page booklet rose to ¢644 under the standard service. Additionally, expedited service now entails a charge of ¢800 for a 48-page booklet and ¢700 for a 32-page booklet. The Ministry justified this adjustment by citing alignment with the 2023 fees and charges regulations, L.I.2481.
However, Ablakwa contends that imposing such drastic fee increases amidst the current economic crisis and unprecedented high cost of living is unjustifiable. He took to social media to express his disappointment, revealing that he and his colleagues on the Foreign Affairs Committee had proposed a phased strategy for fee adjustments, which would have been implemented once economic conditions improved. Regrettably, their recommendations are on disregard by the Ministry.
In light of these developments, Ablakwa urged the Ministry to reconsider its decision, emphasizing the detrimental impact it would have on the populace. His call for immediate action reflects the concerns of many citizens who feel burdened by the escalating cost of essential services. Ablakwa’s stance underscores the importance of government responsiveness to the needs and welfare of its citizens, particularly during challenging times.
