Afari Gyan Says Manipulation Of Elections By Officials Should Be Treated As Treason

Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, the former chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), has advocated for harsh punishments for anyone who commit major electoral offenses, especially if they work as electronic experts or professional election administrators.

He contends that such acts could be seen as treasonous since they are intended to weaken the will of the people.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Ghana Bar Association’s (GBA) annual conference in Kumasi, Dr. Afari Gyan stressed that election experts are fully aware of the seriousness of their activities because of their competence.

He emphasized that in order to discourage others from participating in similar misbehavior, these people—including election officials and electronic specialists manipulating results—should suffer dire repercussions.

Dr. Afari Gyan emphasized the significance of maintaining voting process integrity, stating that a legitimate vote is essential to accurately representing the electorate’s choices in a democratic election.

Furthermore, he issued a warning, saying that any attempt to rig or undermine the election process should be taken very seriously, especially by those in charge of it.

Dr. Afari Gyan counseled candidates and political parties to obtain the required information prior to contesting election results in court.

He emphasized that these records are necessary for rebuilding and verifying election results, and he asked people who are challenging the results to make sure their pink sheets are genuine and correctly completed before pursuing legal action.

“Pink sheets are the most important source documents for reconstructing election results,” he asserted. “If you don’t have authentic and properly executed pink sheets, think carefully before going to court.”
