The Volta River Authority (VRA) has declared that it will notify pertinent parties about a possible overflow of water from the Akosombo Dam.
Over forty stakeholders, including the Minister for the Interior and all the assemblies within the dam’s catchment areas, received a notice signed by Ing. Ken Arthur, Deputy Chief Executive in Charge of Services at VRA, indicating that engagement is starting right away and that spillage may occur if needed.
The notice stated;
“The Volta River Authority (VRA) intends to commence engagements regarding the potential controlled spillage of water from the Akosombo Dam. This precautionary measure is crucial to maintaining the structural integrity of the dam and ensuring the safety of our communities,”
It added that “We propose to engage you and the relevant team to discuss the potential implications, mitigative measures and information dissemination.”
On September 15, 2023, VRA began releasing extra water from the Akosombo Dam. This caused catastrophic flooding in the neighboring areas, especially in the Lower Volta.
The VRA declared the end of the 2023 controlled spillage on October 30, 2023.
Government estimates show that the flooding affected over 5,000 dwellings and over 88,000 individuals.
Resettlement and health centers for the affected were constructed with the help of Citi FM, Channel One TV, and their listeners.
Additionally, the government announced a GH¢220 million compensation package for the victims. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated that GH¢80 million had been disbursed during his 67th Independence Day speech in Koforidua on March 6, 2023.
The North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, refuted the president’s GH¢80 million declaration.
