In an interview with France 24, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana expressed his desire that Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger would re-join the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc.
Akufo-Addo acknowledged that the decision by the military juntas in the three nations to leave ECOWAS was a setback and that since French troops left the Sahel region last year, the security situation has gotten worse.
Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo declared that the move was a setback for regional security months after the military juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger declared they were leaving ECOWAS and forming a Confederation of Sahel States.
According to Akufo-Addo, it was clear that the military leaders of the three nations had no intention of stepping down and bringing democracy back to the people.
He claimed that the security situation in the Sahel has gotten worse since French troops left the region last year.
After years of economic disaster, he praised the agreement made a few days ago with almost all of Ghana’s creditors to restructure the country’s debt as a significant accomplishment.
He dismissed the opposition’s accusations that his government was repressing protestors and that the election process was faulty.
