On Thursday, August 1, President Nana Akufo-Addo formally opened the new Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Operational Headquarters, marking a significant milestone that would advance the country’s oil and gas sector.
This ceremony not only marks the completion of a four-year initiative, but it also demonstrates the government’s dedication to decentralizing growth and guaranteeing that the resources of the country are distributed fairly among all areas.
During his speech, President Akufo-Addo discussed the importance of the new facility and said that it fulfilled a pledge he had made to the chiefs and people of the Western Region when running for president in 2016.
The President underlined that the building of the GNPC headquarters in Takoradi is more than just a fulfilling of a campaign promise; it is a strategic move to bring development closer to the communities that contribute considerably to Ghana’s riches through their land and sea resources.
Several logistical and financial obstacles, as well as the unusual COVID-19 pandemic, hampered the development of the state-of-the-art hospital.
The Western Region’s people’s unflinching support and smart planning allowed the project to succeed in spite of these setbacks.
President Akufo-Addo thanked everyone involved, including the Regional Minister and local chiefs, for completing the GNPC Operational Headquarters in Takoradi. He noted its strategic location enhances efficiency and collaboration within Ghana’s oil and gas industry. The new facility is also expected to boost the local economy.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted job opportunities from GNPC’s presence, boosting local businesses and economic growth. He praised GNPC’s Foundation, based in Takoradi for seven years, for its investments in community development, health, education, sanitation, and artisan training in the Western Region.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized transforming GNPC into a world-class oil company. The new seven-story headquarters features advanced technology, a 300-seat auditorium, a gym, a cafeteria, and a business center. It’s designed for energy efficiency and aims for LEED certification. The President also highlighted the importance of environmental and social responsibility in petroleum resource exploitation.
He urged GNPC and other industry stakeholders to continue working collaboratively with local communities, environmental groups, and regulatory bodies to implement best practices that minimize environmental impact.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo called for a renewed focus on local content and participation in the oil and gas industry, urging the continued capacity building of local businesses and professionals to ensure they can benefit meaningfully from the sector.
As he concluded his speech, President Akufo-Addo expressed his sincere gratitude to the chiefs and people of the Western Region for their support and patience.
He congratulated the management and staff of GNPC on this remarkable achievement and officially declared the “GNPC Energy House” commissioned.
